Sorry everyone I could not resist the cheesy title…LOL.

I worked in insurance for many years and I am constantly amazed by the amount of people who do not shop their car insurance. They just keep the same policy year after year. By “shopping” your insurance you can save quite a bit of money!

We have been with Progressive for almost 8 years. We did shop every year but never saw a big enough difference to switch, until I tried Geico. I was flabbergasted when I saw the quote. Florida is one of the most expensive states for car insurance. We have high limits (no accidents/tickets) and we were paying $1200 every six months, which is ridiculous! It turns out that Geico has a state employee program (hubby works for the state) and through that program we were able to get our premium down to $798 – that is a $800 savings per year!!!!

There are hundreds of companies offering insurance now and each state has different programs. Make sure to check all the affiliations you have (AAA, clubs, etc) as you might be able to get in certain programs because of those affiliations. Progressive is great because they give you several company quotes at the same time.

I am not trying to push one company or the other, I am simply trying to make you “think” about your car insurance. If you are trying to save money this is one place where you really can save a lot!

Here are a few places you can start…
Progressive
Geico
AIG Direct
Allstate
21st Century

There are a TON of companies, so make sure to check out several. Another option is that if you have an insurance agent call them and tell them you want several quotes on your car insurance. If you don’t tell them to shop it, they won’t. Don’t forget this will work for your homeowners insurance as well!

USAA is another one that you can go with if you are military. They are pushy when it comes to getting other products there (ie bank or auto loan) but their insurance is really cheap. Just another option.

We started shopping around for insurance because we have State Farm and every year our premiums kept going up. My husband is a police officer so we decided to check with Star and Sheild. We are getting a savings of $1200/ year on our car insurance and $900/year on our homeowners!!!

Oh yea it was BAD. We were living in downtown Tampa at the time in the WORST zip code (great location though). I about died when our insurance went from $500 to over $2000 just for moving to that zip code from Tallahassee…LOL

State Farm has been the cheapest for us, I know Progressive and Geico wanted a lot more than State Farm in our situation. We only pay $480 every six months for 2 vehicles full coverage. We live in Oklahoma.

Sheri, Try Metropolitan Casualty Insurance.. They have State discounts and can deduct premiums from paystubs

thanks for the heads up on a state employee discount! I work for the state. I’m in Texas and our rates are through the roof because of Houston.

DO NOT go with progressive. I live in the accident Capitol, Nevada. If you live here, you’ve been in an accident at least once. My husband was side swiped on the freeway. The other guys insurance, a company I’d never heard of, paid up right away. Our insurance company, progressive. Did not want to pay us, we had to get a lawyer and three years later, we should have received our full $15,000 in underinsured motorist coverage, received only $5,000 and still had to pay the lawyer. They are not on your side and do not want to pay up for the coverage you pay for every month. I guess that’s why they’re so cheap. Thought I’d send out a warning. We had progressive for years and when you need your insurance the most, they were definitely not worth the discounted price. My husband now has permanent neck problems and frequent headaches and Progressive thought that was only worth $5,000 on insurance coming out of our pocket. Now we have State Farm. Pretty happy.

WOW Lisa I am the exact opposite…LOL. We had Progressive for several years with no issues. I got in a wreck and they were awesome, showed up immediately and paid within 2 days. I moved from State Farm to Progressive because they did not pay on a claim that they should have.

state farm saved me a little when i was living in califiornia but here in texas geico is way better !!! i love them and there customer service is awesome.

something else SHERI you should know is that i save $80 per 6 months ($40 for me and $40 for hubby ) just for doing defensive driving. we both got tickets but u don’t have to get one in order to do defensive driving. you can do it online, it costs $25 but what’s awesome is that you get the discount for 3 years.

    so pay $25 for you and save $40 x 6 240
    pay $25 for hubby and save $40 * 6 = 240

480 – $50 that you paid will save you another $430 in 3 years, $143 per year, $71 per 6 months !! not bad for an easy online class. i have the website if u wanna do it.

We also saved a lot by switching to Gieco. In Los Angeles Allstate was cheaper but in CT they were raising our rates even though we had never made a claim & didn’t have tickets. Gieco was surprised what they were charging for the number of years we’d been with them.
