5 Best & Worst Foods to Buy Frozen

The debate between frozen and fresh has been going on since ages, and while choosing fresh is almost always the best thing to do, since it ensures you get the maximum nutritional benefits out of your food, it is not always possible. Infact, freezing certain foods can still help preserve their nutrients and help you save up on a lot of time and money too.

The act of freezing doesn’t make food healthy or unhealthy; it really depends upon the nutritional content of the food that gets frozen. Frozen fruits and veggies can be very healthy, but frozen pizzas, snacks, and other entrees can be quite unhealthy.

So here’s helping you make the best of it. Read on to discover the 5 best and worst foods you can buy frozen.

Foods to Buy Frozen

  • Raspberries: While most berries retain their maximum nutrients when they’re fresh, but most frozen raspberries still do the job well. You can then quickly add them on your breakfast bowls or slip them into your smoothie.
  • Spiralized veggies: Spiral veggies have become a hit in the last few years, and have very efficiently, replaced the traditional pasta. It does make sense to buy boxes of these and have them stocked up in your refrigerator so that you can quickly whip up a pasta dish using one of them when you’re not sure what to cook, or don’t want to spend a lot of time in the kitchen.
  • Kale: As opposed to fresh kale, frozen kale has an incredible texture and a nice and delicious flavor, which means, you’ll be able to add more of it to your home cooked meals.
  • Blueberries: Blueberries are again, like raspberries, best eaten fresh, but even if you get your hands on a box of frozen variety, they can be really great. You’ll get more antioxidants out of a box of frozen blueberries than out of the out-of-season variety.
  • Spinach: Spinach is one of the most nutritious greens out there, and if you buy it frozen, you’ll be able to include more of it into your meals, since you’ll need to spend no time at all prepping and washing them.

Foods NOT to Buy Frozen

  • Frozen breakfast: Those ready-to-eat breakfast sandwiches and hash browns might save you some time, but they’ll quickly burn a hole in your wallet and are also loaded with saturated fats and sodium- need we say more?
  • Waffles: Love how simple and easy frozen waffles can be? Why not make them yourself at home, by batch making them on a weekend and popping them in the freezer for the weekdays? They’ll be much healthier that way.
  • Ready to eat pastas: Ready to eat pasta boxes that need you to just heat things up in the microwave for a couple of minutes may seem great, and even healthier as opposed to takeouts, but that’s actually not. Most of these are loaded with sodium and fat, and have no nutritive value.
  • Smoothie base: If you love breakfast smoothies, picking up that ready smoothie base might seem tempting, since you’ll end up saving a little more time that way. It turns out though, that it could be one of the worst things to do.
  • Kid’s meals: Frozen kid’s meals again, like the frozen pasta dinners, are just loaded with preservatives and processed ingredients, and hardly offer any nutritive value. When it comes to offering kids food, it is best to stick to home cooked meals made using fresh ingredients.
