Makeshift Brush

Makeshift Kitchen Brush

Need to brush some melted butter or something similar atop a pie or recipe but don’t own a brush? Have no fear, simply cut a piece of parchment paper, fold it up into a rectangle shape, cut slits in the end and voila, you have a kitchen brush to use.

Expired Eggs

Ignore the sell-by date on our carton of eggs, that’s not necessarily a date for when the eggs go bad. There’s another way to make sure you know if the eggs are expired. Grab the egg, place in a cup of cold water. If the egg floats, it’s expired. If the egg sinks, it’s still good.

Speed up Meatloaf

Corn Shaped Meatloaf

If you want to serve up a nice dish like meatloaf but don’t want to wait forever for the meal to finish cooking, grab a cupcake pan. Divide the portions up into little cupcake size portions, drop it in the oven and watch as it cooks in half the time.

I actually like to use a cornbread cast iron pan. Makes little logs and they come out crispy!

Save the Onions

Ever try to sauté onions and overcook them? It’s not easy to sauté onions just right. The pan heats up long before the onions are done. If you find that your onions are cooking too quickly, drop an ice cube in the pan. The water will evaporate quickly and allow the pan to cool just enough.

Bacon in the Oven

Oven Bacon

Many restaurants use this kitchen life hack to evenly cook up that crisp bacon served to you during your breakfast outing. Preheat your oven to 400 degrees Fahrenheit, place aluminum foil on a baking sheet, put bacon on top, place in oven and watch as the bacon cooks quicker and more even.

If you need bacon fast, use an Air Fryer. SUPER fast and super great bacon in minutes!

Hard Boiled Eggs

Make hard-boiled eggs in a cinch with shells that simply fall off. Place up to one dozen eggs in a steamer basket, seated above boiling water for about 15 minutes. Remove from heat and watch as the eggshells just fall right off. This can also be accomplished in an Instant Pot. Just put them in for 10 minutes and quick release. This little handy egg rack makes it easy!

Buy Serrated Knives

If you don’t have a sharpening stone or just don’t want to use it to sharpen those knives, purchase a set of serrated knives. This saw like knife will help cut through anything and not require any sharpening. Perfect to have on hand for those times you neglected to sharpen the other knives.

There you have it, a few amazing kitchen life hacks to help you survive in the kitchen when you’re cooking up a meal, entertaining guests or simply want to cut some corners in to save time.
