Heads up, Walgreens shoppers—big changes are coming. The pharmacy chain has announced plans to close approximately 1,200 stores nationwide over the next three years, with 500 closures expected in 2025.
These closures are part of a strategic effort to improve profitability and streamline operations, as about 25% of Walgreens locations are currently unprofitable.
🛑 Why the Closures?
Walgreens cites several factors for the decision:
Declining prescription reimbursements: Lower payments from insurance companies have impacted revenue.
Increased competition: Online retailers and other pharmacy chains have intensified market competition.
Operational costs: Rising expenses have made it challenging to maintain profitability at certain locations.
CEO Tim Wentworth stated that this “turnaround will take time, but we are confident it will yield significant financial and consumer benefits over the long term”.
