What to Splurge on and What to Skip at Disney World in 2026

If you’re planning a trip to Disney World, you may be wondering what’s worth splurging on and which things can be skipped.

After years of visiting (we live in FL!!), I’ve learned that while it’s important not to go overboard, there are some specific experiences that are definitely worth the extra dollars to save you time and stress.

What You Can do at Disney World for FREE!

Magic Kingdom is the heart of Disney, but it offers so much more than just expensive rides. If you want to save some cash, fill your trip with these free activities so you can save your budget for the things your family really wants:

  • The Scenery & Atmosphere: Simply walking through the park, enjoying the live music on Main Street, and exploring the Tree of Life at Animal Kingdom costs nothing.
  • Character Sightings: While “Meet and Greets” have lines, you can see characters in parades and cavalcades throughout the day for free.
  • Scavenger Hunts: Check out the free interactive games like “A Pirates Adventure” in Magic Kingdom or the wilderness explorer badges in Animal Kingdom.
  • Fireworks: You don’t need a special dessert party ticket to see the world-class nighttime spectaculars!

What is worth the splurge at Disney World?

The trick is to figure out beforehand what is a “must-do” for your kids. Here are the items that genuinely upgrade your vacation experience:

1. Park Hopper Tickets

If you’re on a short trip (3 days or less), Park Hoppers are essential. They allow you to start your morning in one park and hop to another for dinner or fireworks, letting you see much more in a limited time.

2. On-Site Hotel Rooms

Staying at a Disney resort gives you Early Theme Park Entry. Getting into the parks 30 minutes before the general public lets you knock out the most popular rides (like Seven Dwarfs Mine Train) with almost no wait.

3. Lightning Lane Multi Pass (Formerly Genie+)

Disney replaced Genie+ with the Lightning Lane Multi Pass. It is worth every penny. Lines for popular attractions can hit 120+ minutes; this service lets you skip the standby line. If you only splurge on one thing to save your sanity, make it this.

What Should you Skip? (Save Big Money Here)

Most people can’t afford the “all-the-bells-and-whistles” trip. Here is where you can cut the budget significantly without losing the magic:

Skip: In-Park Souvenirs

Plushies and t-shirts in the park are marked up 3x. Buy your Disney gear at Shop Disney or even Walmart/Target before you leave. Pack them in your suitcase and surprise the kids each morning!

Skip: Bottled Water

A bottle of water in the park is nearly $5. Quick service locations give you cups of ice water for FREE. Just walk up to any counter and ask. Bring a reusable bottle and fill it up all day.

Skip: Overpriced Snacks

Pack your own granola bars, crackers, and fruit. You are allowed to bring food into the parks! For “special” treats like big lollipops, hit the dollar store before your trip and pull them out when the kids get hungry.

Skip: Paid Wi-Fi & Technical Extras

Disney offers free Wi-Fi throughout the parks. While it can be spotty in some corners, it is perfectly fine for using the My Disney Experience app. Don’t pay for “premium” connections unless you’re working from the park.

Skip: Mandatory Tipping Confusion

While you should always tip your servers at sit-down restaurants, you do not need to tip at Quick Service (counter) locations or for Disney transportation (bus/monorail/boat). Knowing where tips are expected helps you budget accurately!

With a little bit of planning, you can have a world-class vacation without the world-class debt. Focus on the time-savers (Splurges) and cut out the “stuff” (Skips)!
