Fun Ways to Save Time in the Kitchen
I love cooking but managing a kitchen can feel like a full-time job. Luckily I have figured out a few clever tricks, you can reduce waste, stay organized, and actually enjoy your time behind the stove.
Here are my favorite tried-and-true kitchen hacks to simplify your life.
Pro-Tip: To save the most money in the kitchen, always “Shop Your Pantry” before heading to the store. You likely have ingredients for 2-3 full meals hiding in the back of your cupboards!
Freshness & Storage Hacks
1. Keep Herbs Fresh for Weeks
Fresh herbs wilt in a heartbeat. Wrap them in a damp paper towel and store them in an airtight container in the fridge. For cilantro and parsley, treat them like flowers: put the stems in a glass of water to keep them vibrant for days. Better yet, regrow your herbs from scraps!
2. The Egg Freshness Test
Not sure if those eggs are still good? Place them in a bowl of water. Fresh eggs will sink and lay flat. Older eggs will stand up or float. If it floats, toss it!
3. Stop Avocado Browning
To keep a cut avocado green, store it in a container with a slice of onion or brush the flesh with lemon juice. The acids and sulfur slow down the oxidation process. Lime juice works too!
4. Keep Brown Sugar Soft
Toss a single marshmallow or a slice of bread into your brown sugar container. It draws in the moisture and prevents the sugar from turning into a rock-hard brick.
NOTE: Marshmallows last a long time. Only leave the bread in for 24 hours. That is usually enough time to soften a hard block of sugar. Once the sugar is soft, remove the bread and seal the container tightly.
5. Revive Stale Bread
Don’t throw away that hard loaf! Sprinkle the crust with water and pop it in the oven at 350°F for 5 minutes. It will come out soft and crusty again.
Prep & Cooking Shortcuts
6. The Easiest Way to Peel Garlic
Place your garlic cloves in a jar with a lid and shake it vigorously for 10-15 seconds. The skins will fall right off without leaving your hands sticky.
7. Prevent Pot Overflows
Lay a wooden spoon across the top of a boiling pot of pasta. The spoon breaks the surface tension of the bubbles and stops the water from spilling over your stove.
8. Slicing Cherry Tomatoes in Bulk
Place a handful of cherry tomatoes between two plastic lids or plates. Gently press down and run a sharp knife through the middle. You can slice a dozen tomatoes in one go!
9. Peel Ginger with a Spoon
Skip the knife or peeler. Use the edge of a common spoon to scrape the skin off ginger. It gets into the nooks and crannies easily without wasting any of the root.
10. Soften Butter in Seconds
If you forgot to take the butter out for baking, use a cheese grater! Grating cold butter gives it more surface area so it softens almost instantly.
Cleaning & Organization
11. The Steam-Clean Microwave Hack
Fill a bowl with water and lemon slices. Microwave for 3-5 minutes until the door is steamy. Let it sit for a minute, then wipe—all the dried-on food will slide right off.
12. Clean Your Blender in 10 Seconds
As soon as you’re done blending, fill it halfway with warm water and a drop of dish soap. Run the blender for 10 seconds, rinse, and you’re done. No scrubbing blades!
13. Remove Plastic Stains
Got orange tomato stains on your Tupperware? Make a paste of baking soda and water, rub it into the stain, and let it sit for 30 minutes before washing.
14. Use a Lazy Susan
Put a Lazy Susan in your fridge or pantry. It stops jars from getting “lost” in the back and makes it easy to see exactly what you have on hand.
Tip: Freeze your leftover coffee into ice cubes. Use them for iced coffee later so your drink doesn’t get watered down!
Efficiency & Cleaning Hacks
15. Remove Corn Silk Effortlessly
After husking corn, rub a damp paper towel over the cob. The moisture and texture of the towel grab those pesky fine strands of silk and pull them right off.
16. Store Plastic Wrap in the Fridge
If your plastic wrap is always tangling or won’t stick, try storing it in the fridge. The cold air reduces static electricity, making it much easier to handle and wrap over dishes.
17. Use Unflavored Floss for Clean Cuts
For soft items like goat cheese, cinnamon rolls, or even cakes, use a piece of unflavored dental floss. Hold it tight and press down for a perfectly clean slice that won’t squish your food.
18. The Muffin Tin Condiment Server
Hosting a BBQ? Use a muffin tin to serve ketchup, mustard, onions, and relish. It keeps everything in one place, looks great, and makes cleanup a breeze.
19. Freeze Grapes to Chill Wine
Don’t water down your wine with ice cubes. Keep a bag of grapes in the freezer and toss a few into your glass. They keep the drink cold without diluting the flavor, and you get a snack at the end!
20. Ripen Fruit Faster with an Apple
Need a ripe banana or avocado right now? Place it in a brown paper bag with an apple. Apples release ethylene gas, which naturally speeds up the ripening process of other fruits.
21. Arranged Food in a Ring for Even Reheating
When using the microwave, push your food to the edges of the plate, leaving a hole in the middle (like a donut). This allows the microwave energy to reach the center of the food more evenly, eliminating “cold spots.”
22. Keep Potatoes from Sprouting
Store your potatoes in a cool, dark place with an apple. Just like with ripening, the gases from the apple actually prevent potatoes from sprouting, keeping them fresh for weeks longer.
23. Clean Your Cast Iron with Salt
Never use soap on your seasoned cast iron! Instead, use a handful of coarse kosher salt and a little water to scrub away stuck-on bits. It acts as an abrasive without stripping the non-stick seasoning.
24. Use a Pizza Cutter for Everything
A pizza cutter isn’t just for pies. Use it to quickly chop fresh herbs, cut pancakes into bite-sized pieces for kids, or even slice through homemade fudge.
25. DIY Vegetable Wash
Don’t buy pricey produce washes. Mix one part white vinegar with three parts water in a spray bottle. It’s a natural, “swag” way to remove wax and pesticides from your fruits and veggies.
