I don’t know about you, but no one in my family — or my friends — had cell phone service yesterday. Phones stuck in SOS mode, calls not going through… total chaos. And of course, we all had one thing in common: Verizon.
Verizon has now confirmed a major nationwide outage that disrupted calling and cellular service for many U.S. customers for more than 10 hours on Wednesday. Service wasn’t fully restored until 10:20 p.m. ET.
While the company hasn’t shared what caused the outage, Verizon says its engineering teams were deployed to resolve an issue impacting wireless voice and data services. The carrier also issued a public apology, acknowledging the widespread disruption and frustration experienced by customers.
What Happened (Quick Breakdown)
Here’s a fast snapshot of how the outage unfolded and what customers experienced:
- Outage reports began around noon ET
- Issues peaked in the early afternoon
- More than 1.5 million reports were logged by 5 p.m. ET
- Some customers saw “SOS” mode or no signal
- In parts of New York, alerts warned of possible 911 disruptions
According to Downdetector, major metro areas impacted included New York, Houston, Philadelphia, Dallas, and Miami, though customers nationwide reported problems.
Verizon’s Response
After services were restored, Verizon shared what customers can expect next:
- A public apology posted on social media
- A $20 account credit for impacted customers
- Business customers to be contacted directly regarding compensation
Other carriers, including T-Mobile and AT&T, confirmed their networks were operating normally, noting that any issues were likely related to contacting Verizon users.
How to Claim the $20 Verizon Credit
Most customers won’t need to do much to receive the credit, but here’s how to check:
- Open the My Verizon app
- Log into your account
- Look for a notification or account alert about the outage credit
- The $20 credit should apply automatically to eligible accounts
If you don’t see it right away:
- Check your next billing statement
- Make sure the app is updated
- Use Verizon’s in-app chat support if needed
Verizon says the credit typically covers multiple days of service.
What to Do During a Cellular Outage
If something like this happens again, these tips can help you stay connected:
- Connect to Wi-Fi when available
- Turn on Wi-Fi calling and messaging
- Use devices or lines from another carrier if possible
- On newer iPhones, satellite messaging may be available when cellular and Wi-Fi are down
