Free Online Music Classes: Try Before You Buy!
Got a desire to learn music but not sure when and how to begin? Or maybe it is your little one that needs help. Whatever it is, I’ve got you covered!
I’ve been there—my son wanted to learn guitar, so we signed him up for what he called a “Rock Star” class. It was exciting, but it was also incredibly expensive.
I really wish I had known about these free programs back then so he could have tested the waters before we invested any money!
The Swag Strategy:
Private music lessons can easily cost $200+ a month. By using free online tools and “brushing up” on the basics yourself, you can save thousands of dollars while your child (or you!) decides if they actually want to stick with it.
1. Score the Instrument for Less
Don’t buy a brand new instrument for a beginner! Ask friends and family if they have a guitar or keyboard gathering dust in a closet.
Check Facebook Marketplace or Craigslist at the end of the school year when many families are cleaning out.
If you want new, check out Amazon; I actually bought my son’s trombone there for half of what the local music shop wanted!
2. Master the Fundamentals (For Free)
Before paying for a coach, use YouTube to explore different instruments. It’s a great way for kids to see what the “daily practice” actually looks like.
For the technical side, check out Teoria. It covers the fundamentals of music theory and reading notes through free interactive exercises.
3. Best Learning Sites by Instrument
- Piano: Zebra Keys and Piano Nanny offer full lessons and exercises for free. If you’re on a tablet, the Simply Piano app is a game-changer for kids.
- Guitar: Aspiring rockers should head to Ultimate Guitar or Shred Academy for free basics and techniques.
- Drums: ArtistWorks has a great selection of drumming lessons to get them started without the high hourly fee.
💡 PRO-TIP: Check your local library! Many libraries provide free access to premium sites like LinkedIn Learning or Gale Courses, which often have professional-grade music theory and instrument classes that would normally cost a fortune.
