The “No-Go” List: 10 Items to NEVER Buy Used (And Where to Get Them Cheap New)

Thrifting smart: what to never buy used

I am all about the thrill of the hunt, but even the most dedicated thrifter knows there’s a limit. Sometimes, a “deal” on a used item is actually a ticking time bomb for your health, your home, or your safety. With the rise of deep-discount retailers and clearance “hacks,” it’s often cheaper to buy these 10 items brand new than to risk the used version.

Before you hit the garage sales or Facebook Marketplace, make sure these items aren’t on your list.

1. Mattresses & Upholstered Furniture

This is the ultimate “Swag Warning.” Between bed bugs, dust mites, and… let’s face it, other people’s biological history, a used mattress is never a good deal.

  • A Better Strategy: Instead of a used mattress, wait for “Holiday Weekend” sales at online-only retailers. You can often snag a brand-new, vacuum-sealed memory foam mattress for under $200.

2. Laptops & Computers

A used computer with no warranty is a massive gamble. The repair costs often exceed the value of the machine.

  • The Better Buy: Look for Manufacturer Refurbished models. They come with a warranty and have been tested. Better yet, shop “Open Box” deals at big-box retailers to get 30-40% off a new unit.

3. Car Seats & Cribs (The Safety Tier)

Safety technology for kids evolves fast. Used car seats may have been in an accident (which compromises the frame invisibly) or might be expired. Cribs are frequently subject to safety recalls that aren’t always easy to spot.

  • Try This Instead: Watch for “Trade-In Events” at stores like Target or Walmart. They will often give you a 20% coupon for a new seat just for bringing in an old one!
  • Or check out a Car Seat check up near you – sometimes you can get free car seats!

Risks of buying used tires

4. Tires & Car Parts

Your tires are the only thing touching the road. A used tire might look like it has “tread,” but rubber degrades over time regardless of how it looks.

  • Your Best Bet: Shop at wholesale clubs (like Costco or Sam’s) where the installation and a 5-year road hazard warranty are often included in the price.
  • Believe it or not, Walmart has tires and they run incredible deals AND do installs. It’s cheaper in the long run!

5. Helmets & Safety Gear

Whether it’s for a bike or a motorcycle, helmets are designed for one impact only. You have no way of knowing if a used helmet has already done its job. Always buy these new to protect your noggin. Check out bike events in your city. Police often give out free helmets!

6. Footwear & Swimsuits

Feet sweat, and fungus is real. Shoes mold to the previous owner’s gait, which can actually cause you back and joint pain. For swimsuits and “intimates,” even a hot wash can’t always give you that “fresh swag” feeling.

  • The Real Value: Hit the “End of Season” clearance racks at stores like Old Navy or T.J. Maxx where you can find these for $5 or less—brand new. Cheaper and better than gross suits!

7. Vacuum Cleaners

A used vacuum isn’t just old; it’s a container for someone else’s dust, pet dander, and potentially fleas.

  • The Thrifty Alternative: You can find highly-rated, corded stick vacuums for under $40 during Amazon Prime Day or Black Friday. It’s worth the extra few dollars to start with a clean filter!

Thrifting is a lifestyle, but smart thrifting is an art. By avoiding these high-risk items, you’re making sure your hard-earned money goes toward deals that actually last. Stick to buying wood furniture, home decor, and books used—and keep the high-risk items in your “Buy New” column!
