Easy Homemade Dog Food Recipe
Buying premium dog food can get expensive fast, so I like making simple homemade food for Max using ingredients we already have at home. It cuts waste, saves money, and turns leftovers into something useful.
⚠️ Note: Every dog is different! Check with your vet before making big diet changes. This is just how I feed my dog!
The “Cook Once” Strategy
This is easy for us because this is how we already eat!
We stick to lean proteins and veggies, so we just make extra for Max. It’s about being resourceful with what’s in the pantry. Instead of scraping that last half-cup of rice or those leftover green beans into the trash, they go into Max’s bowl. Repurpose, don’t waste!
What I Use:
- Cooked white or brown rice
- Lean chicken, turkey, or beef
- Plain carrots, green beans, or peas
- Sweet potato or Pumpkin
- A little plain scrambled egg
The Golden Rule:
I set aside plain ingredients before seasoning our dinner. If I plan on sharing with Max, I don’t season until we are eating.
STAY AWAY FROM: Onions, garlic, heavy spices, or greasy leftovers. Just the clean stuff!
How I Make It
- Add cooked rice to a bowl.
- Add lean cooked meat.
- Add cooked veggies.
- Use a food chopper to finely combine everything. I have to or Max won’t eat the green veggies lol.
- Portion into bags for easy grabs!
My Ratio: 50% Meat | 25% Rice | 25% Veggies
⚠️ Never Use (Toxic for Dogs):
- ✖ Onions & Garlic
- ✖ Grapes & Raisins
- ✖ Chocolate
- ✖ Fatty Scraps / Bones
🌭 Sheri’s Genius Treat Hack
I got sick of spending a ton on high-end treats. Now I buy the Bar S hot dogs and freeze them. You get 8 for about $1! They are human-grade and Max goes crazy for them. It’s way cheaper than those fancy store-bought treats, especially on hot summer days!
