That My Family Actually Uses and Loves!

Let’s be honest—keeping kids learning, engaged, and off mindless screen time isn’t always easy. But thanks to some awesome (and totally free!) educational websites and apps, it’s gotten a whole lot easier to sneak in learning—whether it’s for homework help, screen time with purpose, or just plain curiosity.
These are real-deal resources we’ve used as a family or have bookmarked for those “I’m bored” moments that need a little educational twist.
📚 For K–12 Students
Khan Academy
Hands-down one of my go-to’s for helping with math I haven’t seen since the ’90s. Khan Academy has everything—math, science, reading, even SAT prep. The lessons are broken down into bite-sized videos and interactive practice problems. Totally free and super easy to use.
Duolingo
Want your kid (or you!) to start picking up Spanish, French, Japanese, or even Klingon? Duolingo turns language learning into a game. Great for all ages, and the app keeps you motivated with daily streaks and silly characters.
PBS Kids
If you’ve got younger ones, this site is gold. Educational games, videos, and activities all tied to beloved characters like Daniel Tiger and Wild Kratts. It’s learning through play, and it’s gentle enough for preschoolers but still educational for early elementary.
🎓 For Teens, College Students & Lifelong Learners
Coursera
Want to take a class from Yale or Google without spending a dime? Coursera offers free access to tons of courses—you can audit most of them and skip the certificate fee. Great for high schoolers prepping for college or adults brushing up on skills.
edX
Very similar to Coursera, but you’ll find courses from Harvard, MIT, and more. Again, most classes can be taken for free if you don’t need a certificate. The content is legit and high quality.
Project Gutenberg
Calling all bookworms—this site has over 60,000 free ebooks. Think Jane Austen, Shakespeare, Mark Twain—tons of classics that are great for school assignments or cozy weekend reads.
💻 For Creative & Tech-Savvy Kids (or Parents)
Codecademy (Free Tier)
This site breaks down coding into super manageable chunks. Kids (and adults) can learn HTML, Python, JavaScript, and more through interactive lessons. The free version has plenty to get started with—no experience needed.
FreeCodeCamp
If you’ve got a high schooler (or you!) who really wants to learn how to build websites, apps, or work with data, FreeCodeCamp is one of the most robust and well-structured free programs out there. Tons of tutorials and real-world projects to build as you go.
Tinkercad
This one’s fun. It’s a free, kid-friendly tool for learning basic 3D design, electronics, and even coding. Great for creative kids who like to build, design, or are curious about 3D printing or engineering. Super visual and very hands-on.
Thoughts from a Mom Who’s Tried Them
The beauty of these resources? They’re totally free, super flexible, and can be used in whatever way works for your family. Need some extra math practice before a test? Want screen time that actually teaches something? Just trying to keep your kids busy with something kinda productive? These sites and apps are a great place to start.
I keep a few of these bookmarked on our iPad and have them saved under an “Education” folder for quick access when I need a backup plan. No subscriptions. No credit cards. Just quality learning tools—because free and helpful is my favorite combo. Enjoy!
