Easy Ways to Score Cheap School Uniforms!

save on school uniforms

Here’s how to save BIG on school uniforms (especially if you’ve got more than one kid to outfit):

School uniforms can get pricey fast—especially when they all need multiples. My son went to private school for a few years (mostly because it was cheaper than daycare around here), and I picked up some money-saving tricks along the way.

Watch for Uniform Exchanges at your school

Some schools do uniform exchanges where you bring in old ones and pick out new ones in the sizes you need. If you don’t see signs for it, ask the office. This can be a great way to get the clothes you need for free or super cheap.

One year I lucked into 6 pair of brand new Lands’ End shorts, all I had to do was trade his old ones!

Check Thrift Stores and Consignment Shops

You’d be shocked how many gently used uniforms end up at local thrift stores—especially near schools that require them. Bonus points if you find logo items your school requires. Total score.

Skip the name brands when you can

My son’s school “recommended” $27 Lands’ End shorts… yeah, no thanks. We stuck to the required logo shirts but bought khakis and outerwear at Old Navy and Walmart for a fraction of the price.

Unless your’re checking tags, you can’t tell the difference. Definitely worth a shot!

Swap with other school families

Got friends with kids in the same school? Don’t be shy—see if they want to trade uniforms! Chances are, their kids have outgrown pieces your kid could use, and vice versa. You don’t need to make it a big thing—just a quick text to a few school moms can turn into a full-on clothing swap.

Even better, organize a small group swap. Invite a few families over, lay everything out by size, and let everyone “shop” the table. No money needed—just bring what you have and take what you need. It’s a win-win: you declutter, save money, and help other parents do the same.

Plus, kids love seeing their old uniforms go to a friend. Makes it a little more fun for them too!

Shop Off Season

The best deals pop up when no one’s looking for uniforms. I grabbed a bunch of next-year gear from Old Navy at end-of-school sales. Pro tip: buy pants in summer and shorts in winter. Clearance racks are your best friend.
