50 Fun & FREE Date Night Ideas You Probably Haven’t Tried!

date night ideas unique

Date night doesn’t have to mean dinner reservations, expensive tickets or dropping $100 just to get out of the house.

Sometimes you just need someone to throw out an idea that makes you say, “Wait…why haven’t we ever done that?”

We’ve been married close to 25 years, and date nights have always been important to us — especially when our son was little. But some of the dates you remember the most aren’t necessarily the ones you spent the most money on.

So that’s what this list is about.

These aren’t 50 things you have to check off. They’re 50 fun and FREE date night ideas to jump-start your imagination. Steal one, change it completely, combine a couple or use them to come up with something even better.

And we’re starting with the slightly weird ones. 😂

25 FREE Date Ideas That Are a Little Different

1. Have a Fake Power-Outage Date

Turn off the lights, TV and phones and pretend the power is out for the evening.

Grab candles or flashlights, dig out a deck of cards, sit outside, talk or figure out how to entertain yourselves without a screen.

It’s amazing how different your own house feels when you turn everything off.

2. Have an After-Dark Picnic

Picnics don’t have to happen at lunchtime.

Pack food you already have, grab a blanket and have your picnic after dark. Your backyard works just fine if you don’t have somewhere nearby to go.

3. Try a $0 Chopped Challenge

Open the pantry and refrigerator and choose one oddball ingredient that absolutely has to appear in dinner.

Then figure out what you can make using only food already in the house.

No emergency grocery runs allowed. 😂

4. Tour Million-Dollar Open Houses

Look for open houses that are WAY outside your budget and go see how the other half lives.

Pick your favorite house, steal decorating ideas and decide whether anyone actually needs that many bathrooms.

You’re not buying anything, so you might as well shop big!

5. Take a Mystery Road

You know that road you’ve driven past 500 times but have absolutely no idea where it goes?

Today’s the day.

Pick one and follow it. You might find a park, neighborhood, scenic view, weird little store or absolutely nothing — but at least now you’ll know what’s down there.

6. Have a Backyard Campout

If you already own a tent, drag it into the backyard. If you don’t, pile up blankets and chairs outside.

Bring snacks from the kitchen, leave the phones inside and hang out under the stars.

You don’t even have to sleep out there. Indoor plumbing is one of life’s great achievements.

7. Go Geocaching

Turn an ordinary walk into a treasure hunt by looking for geocaches hidden around your area.

You may be surprised how many you’ve walked or driven past without ever knowing they were there.

8. Go Watch Airplanes

Find a safe, legal public spot near your local airport where you can watch planes take off and land.

Then make up stories about where everyone is going.

Hawaii sounds better than a Tuesday morning connection through Atlanta, so we’re going with Hawaii.

9. Tour Model Homes

Check out new neighborhoods with model homes that are open to the public and spend an afternoon collecting ideas.

Pick your favorite floor plan, kitchen, bathroom and completely unnecessary feature you’d love to have anyway.

10. Have Breakfast at Night

Forget dinner.

Make pancakes, eggs, toast, cereal or whatever breakfast food you already have. Put on pajamas and have breakfast at 8 p.m.

There is absolutely no rule saying pancakes have to happen before noon.

This isn’t just for Christmas.

Look for neighborhoods that go crazy decorating for Halloween, Christmas, the Fourth of July or any other holiday and take a walking or driving tour.

See if you can find the perfect spot before the sun disappears.

Go to the library and split up.

Each person picks a movie, book, cookbook or something else they think the other person would like.

Meet back up and reveal your choices.

Who cares. The point is trying something you normally wouldn’t.

19. Have a Progressive Dinner at Home

Appetizer on the porch. Dinner at the table. Dessert outside. Coffee in the living room.

You’re eating the exact same food you would have eaten anyway, but somehow moving around makes it an event.

20. Have a Storm-Watching Date

When a good rainstorm rolls through, sit somewhere safely covered and watch it instead of automatically turning on the TV.

Bring drinks from the kitchen and just listen to the rain.

Florida disclaimer: we’re talking safely under cover — not standing in the yard during a lightning storm. 😂

21. Find the Weirdest Local Landmark

Every town has something strange.

A bizarre statue. Odd building. Giant roadside object. Forgotten historical site. Weird piece of public art.

Find yours and go see it.

22. Go for a Full-Moon Walk

Instead of another ordinary evening walk, wait for a clear night around the full moon and head somewhere familiar and safe.

Same place. Completely different atmosphere.

23. Have a Reverse Date Night

Dessert first.

Then movie, game, walk or whatever you’re doing.

Dinner comes last.

There’s no reason date night has to happen in the correct order.

24. Go Somewhere at the “Wrong” Time

Take something you normally do during the day and do it at a completely different time.

Sometimes changing the time completely changes the place.

25. Start a $0 Date Jar

Write the ideas from this list that you’d actually do on scraps of paper and throw them into a jar.

Next time you both say, “What do you want to do?” followed by “I don’t know, what do YOU want to do?” — pull one.

No more spending half of date night deciding what to do.

The point isn’t the park. It’s going somewhere different.

Make a list before you leave: something red, a funny sign, an animal, something really old, something shaped like a heart and the weirdest thing you can find.

Then see who can photograph everything first.

29. Take a Scenic Drive

Pick a road you’ve never taken, make a playlist and go.

No destination required.

And there’s one important rule: NO ERRANDS.

Grab sandwiches, leftovers, fruit, snacks or whatever you already have and take dinner somewhere with a better view.

Put both phones somewhere else for a couple of hours.

They don’t have to be practical. That’s the fun part.

50. Go Find Something FREE

Make finding the date part of the date.

Look for a free workshop, outdoor movie, museum day, concert, festival, store event, demonstration or something else happening nearby that you’ve never done.

Start with our FREE Events Near Me page and see where you end up.

The Best Date Nights Don’t Have to Cost Anything

One of my favorite date-night memories didn’t involve a fancy restaurant at all.

One year our son decided he was going to make our anniversary dinner for us. His insanely cute idea of “setting a table” on our patio involved kitchen towels and a beach towel. He added a citronella candle, moved some plants around and even brought comfy chairs outside.

He cooked us mac and cheese and pizza — about all he could cook at that age. 😂

And it was one of the most amazing meals ever.

That’s really the point.

You don’t need to spend a bunch of money to make a night memorable. Sometimes you just need to get out of your normal routine.

Turn the power “off.” Eat breakfast at night. Follow that road you’ve always wondered about. Tour a house you could never afford. Find something free happening in your town.

Hopefully these 50 ideas get you thinking — and you come up with a few weird FREE dates of your own!
