National Hot Dog Day grew out of the annual Hot Dog Lunch held on Capitol Hill in Washington, D.C. The popular event brought together members of Congress, government officials and hot dog companies for a summertime picnic.
The National Hot Dog and Sausage Council now recognizes July as National Hot Dog Month and celebrates National Hot Dog Day on the third Wednesday in July. Restaurants and convenience stores mark the occasion with free hot dogs, app rewards and discounted meals.
